Ancestor Figure

Yeah...no.  The materials for this are all wrong!! Bamileke ancestor figures are made of either entirely wood or wood covered in beads…so why are their cowrie shells on the head?? And the necklace and cloth on the figure, that is a practice from other cultures, not Bamileke! I suspect this piece is very possibly mass [...]

Funeral Headdress

Educational properties are the only thing holding this piece afloat.   Um. So, I’d like to speak with a Sadigh sales rep and disrespectfully ask what they were thinking putting their rendition of what was most likely meant to be a skin covered mask created by the people of Ekoi on the market. What should [...]

House with Figures

It’s okay... from a distance... a very far distance. When I first received this, I thought it was great, but then I looked again. The figurines are fairly accurate with their little nose rings, but that’s where the compliments end. The figurines don’t have paint on them and they aren’t wearing any clothes like [...]

Animal Ewer

Too good to be true When I first saw this object for so cheap I thought it was a steal! Items from this area are so rare to find. Most items came from one dig but I thought maybe this one came from a smaller dig or was just recently discovered.  Now I realize [...]

Marka Mask

NOT WHAT I ORDERED  I AM OUTRAGED. I ordered a MARKA mask, and that is NOT what I got!   Where is the metal! Marka masks are usually plated with metal, while this one CLEARLY isn't! This is a Bamana mask!! I would bet this is either a N’tomo initiation mask or a Kore mask, but it looks nothing like either one! A N’tomo mask [...]

Baule Mask

E for effort. Points for accuracy and value towards educational purposes.  My ceremonial Baule mask, is certainly a phony though a beautiful one at that. I’ll only be giving Sadigh the smallest amount of credit due to the realism of the raffia – it was most likely made for tourism, though hopefully by a [...]

Baule Mask

Do not buy! Lackluster forgery!   How pathetic! This “Baule portrait mask” lacks all of the uniqueness and individuality of an authentic portrait mask. It looks mass-produced. This mask also has none of the artistic and figurative pieces seen in real masks, things like metal plating, artistic carving or a crown, used in Baule mask to show health, [...]

Dan Mask

Not as bad as I thought!  When I saw the other reviews from this collection, I knew I was taking a chance, but this Gunyege Masquerade is pretty close to what I know it should be. A Gunyege is a ceremonial racing mask used by the Northern Dan peoples of the Ivory Coast. You read that right, a racing mask. [...]
