Project Description

Worn during secular township celebrations and religious observances, folk clothing provides a visual language of connection to heritage and aids in creating a sense of community for groups of people. This cămașă (kah-ma-shah), or blouse, is an important mode of cultural identification. Women wear these blouses beneath aprons or wrap-around skirts and vests that provide even further adornment.

In eastern Europe, traditional folk outfits from different regions and townships are distinguished by their unique color palettes, silhouettes, and embroidery motifs. While this shirt’s specific culture of origin is unknown, elements such as the geometric patterning and absence of traditional Romanian symbols suggest influence from Slavonic clothing styles. This could be due to Soviet influence over the Romanian lands during the time of production.
