The inspiration for this piece is East Asian peony ink paintings and my multicultural identity. The grafted peony flowers with butterflies represent the process of my personal development. Like me, the peonies are unique in their creation. While other peonies survive with their slender body gently swaying in the breeze, my multicultural identity requires me to have a denser body. The grafting result offers me a body that is adaptable to the changes between my two cultural environments. The butterflies are the symbolic representations of my cross-cultural transformative.
