Conscious Motions

By Jose Socarras

Over the past year, the societal disruption of normalcy has seen numerous dramatic shifts as the pandemic rapidly progressed. Feelings of anxiety, angst, and discomfort took a firm hold over people across the globe, following us around like a personal rain cloud that showered everyone with dread from uncertainty. However, with the mandating of masks, temperature checks, wide-availability of hand sanitizer, increase in curb-side services, and the roll-out of vaccinations, this metaphorical rain cloud is quickly dissipating and to some will optimistically re-main as nothing more than a memory of troubling times.

COVID-19’s firm grasp on the world brought with it a wide array of challenges to over-come, both individually and as a population. Nonetheless, we are now seeing a gradual return to normalcy, which may bring a wave of relief from these challenges for many, but for others it may actually resurface feelings of alienation and tension. It can easily be overlooked that what might have been a comforting world for some, was simultaneously and immensely, a difficult one for others to navigate.

As the world starts to become “familiar” again, both old and new challenges will begin to resurface in the lives of many who found that the standards set by the pandemic contributed to their higher quality of living. This is an important moment to be conscious of the fact that people who are disabled, whether it be mentally or physically, tend to traverse and interact with day-today society in a much different manner than those without. Conscious Motions seeks to serve as an embodiment of this dynamic, through the lens of myself, someone living with chronic Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) during the worldwide pandemic.
