SUMMARY:Paul Briggs: Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Paul Briggs: Gravity will be on view in the Upper Traylor Gallery from September 9 through October 16\, 2026. Paul Briggs will give an artist talk on Wednesday\, October 14\, at 5:00pm in the Upper Traylor Gallery in the Rogers-Traylor Art Building. All are welcome; no RSVP required. For more information\, visit our Events page. \nBriggs’ Gravity series revolves intrinsically around Black perseverance. The work in the exhibit dramatizes resisting the seeming inevitability of being pulled in specific directions by external forces. \nBriggs works primarily using pinch-forming and slab building processes and overall\, his work is about art making as inner development\, broadly understood. He creates distinctive\, high relief pinch-formed ceramic vessels and penetrating slab-built sculptural forms\, both genres often have interior space. The former is his meditative practice\, and the latter offers him opportunity to philosophize concretely and assess traditions that impede the possibility of ongoing equanimity in individuals and communities. Briggs was a 2024 NCECA Demonstrating Artist. He teaches at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and resides in Alfred\, New York. \n

SUMMARY:Seed Sculptures: Ceramics Workshop with Rachel Eng
DESCRIPTION:Led by visiting artist Rachel Eng\, participants in this hands-on workshop will create small sculptures made from clay local to Berea\, Kentucky. The clay sculptures we create will be embedded with purple coneflower (echinacea) seeds and some potting soil. Left unfired\, participants can find a new home for their sculpture outside\, in a garden\, or pot for the flowers to grow. Seed balls were historically used for seed preservation and planting in semi-arid or flood-damaged lands. Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka continued this practice in the early 20th century. Beginner friendly – no experience required.\n\n\nThe workshop is free and open to the public and guests of all ages. Space is limited! Please RSVP by emailing your name and number of attendees in your group to Dr. Kelsey Malone (malonek2@berea.edu). There is potential to make some mess\, so wear clothing you don’t mind getting a bit dirty.

SUMMARY:Sonya Clark: 1-877-OUR-CURL
DESCRIPTION:Opening on Wednesday\, October 28\, Sonya Clark: 1-877-OUR-CURL will present Clark’s print series 1-877-OUR-CURL in its entirety for the first time. \n1-877-OUR-CURL (1-877-687-2875) features seven Black femme poets whose voices can be heard reading in chorus or individually when the phone number is dialed. Their poems are transliterated into Twist\, a custom digital typeface Clark developed with a graphic designer to mimic the natural curl patterns of Black hair. Named by Poet Laureate Rita Dove\, Twist centers African identity and challenges the historical erasure of indigenous scripts by the Roman alphabet. The 128 printed poems exist individually and in every possible combination. The poems are accompanied by a key and a period/hairball made from an overprint of each Twist letter. \nArtist and educator Sonya Clark was born in Washington\, DC.  She is the Winifred Arms Professor of Arts at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Previously she chaired the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University for a dozen years. She holds four honorary doctorates and is a graduate of Amherst College\, Cranbrook Academy of Art\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Clark was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2026 and has received awards from United States Artists\, Pollock-Krasner\, Trellis Foundation\, Art Prize\, and Anonymous Was a Woman. Clark has been granted residencies and fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution\, Indigo Arts Alliance in Maine\, Yaddo in NY\, the American Academy in Rome\, and Black Rock in Senegal\, among others. Clark’s work has been exhibited in more than 500 museums and galleries worldwide. \nSonya Clark will give an artist talk at the exhibition’s opening reception on Wednesday\, October 28\, at 5:00pm in Phelps-Stokes. All are welcome; no RSVP required. For more information\, visit our Events page. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art and the William A. and Leola Piper Boyce Art Exhibition Endowment Fund.
