SUMMARY:All Peoples of the Earth: Selections from the Berea College Art Collection (2026-2027)
DESCRIPTION:Housed in the Dimitrie Berea Gallery\, this ongoing exhibition includes over 100 examples of visual art and material culture that emphasize the connections and experiences that humans share across cultures\, time\, and space. Because our permanent collection is so vast (with over 16\,500 objects!)\, artworks rotate on and off view throughout the year\, so there will be something new to see with every visit you make to the Galleries. \nVisual art and material culture – the things that people design with intention\, creativity\, and technical skill – have for ages provided insight into our belief systems and social customs\, our long-held traditions and day-to-day lives\, and how we see ourselves\, and one another\, as individuals. By closely considering the items that people make\, wear\, use\, and value\, we can learn something deeper about our shared humanity. \nThe selected artworks and objects from the Berea College Art Collection on display in All Peoples of the Earth are organized not by style\, date\, or culture of origin\, but instead by categories of human experience that connect us across time and space. Viewers may notice overlaps in some areas\, instances where these thematic groupings blur. For example\, should a painting of fishing boats be placed within “Observation & Documentation” or “Labor & Leisure”? Does a vessel used in tea ceremonies fit better within “Belief & Ritual” or “Fashion & Function”? These gray areas underscore the multifaceted functions that visual art and material culture can serve\, while also reflecting and exposing the challenges inherent in curatorial work and\, by extension\, all historical inquiry. In resisting easy classification\, art challenges us to be open to the possibility of multiple interpretations\, not only about visual culture but about our world – and ourselves – more broadly.

DESCRIPTION:Rachel Eng: From there to here is on view in the Lower Traylor Gallery from September 2 through October 9\, 2026. Rachel Eng will give an artist talk at the exhibition’s opening reception on Wednesday\, September 2\, at 5:00pm in the Lower Traylor Gallery in the Rogers-Traylor Art Building. All are welcome; no RSVP required. For more information\, visit our Events page. \nIn this visiting artist exhibition\, Rachel Eng presents photographs\, sculptures\, and an installation that consider the interconnectedness of human and non-human life\, land use\, and climate change. Which sites benefit\, and which bear the risks from the material exchanges and how does this relate to the ecological crises we are witnessing today? \nRachel Eng is a visual artist working primarily in installation and sculpture whose work draws from the writings of scientists\, activists\, and creatives like Max Liboiron\, Dina Gilo-Whitaker\, Robin Wall Kimmerer\, Lauret Savoy\, and Anna Tsing who discuss the interconnectedness of non-human life forms and humans. Eng is interested in the agency of materials and their reciprocal impacts on human behaviors and how this connects to land use/development and climate change. Projects often utilize video mapped projections\, clay\, and sound. Eng received her MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder and her BFA from Pennsylvania State University. Eng has shown her work in solo exhibitions at NARS Foundation (Brooklyn\, NY; 2025)\, Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta\, GA; 2023)\, The Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield\, OH; 2023)\, Jane Hartsook Gallery (NYC\, NY; 2022)\, and Flecker Gallery (Long Island\, NY; 2020).  She has held residencies at McColl Center (Charlotte\, NC)\, Studio Kura (Fukuoka\, Japan)\, and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts (Newcastle\, ME)\, among others. In 2021 she was awarded a Windgate Fellowship through the Center for Emerging Visual Arts in Philadelphia and a Puffin Foundation Grant.  Her work is in various private and public collections including the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art (Republic of Korea) and Peninsula College Ceramics Collection (Port Angeles\, WA).  She currently lives in Carlisle\, PA with her family\, where she is an Associate Professor of Art at Dickinson College.

SUMMARY:Paul Briggs: Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Paul Briggs: Gravity will be on view in the Upper Traylor Gallery from September 9 through October 16\, 2026. Paul Briggs will give an artist talk on Wednesday\, October 14\, at 5:00pm in the Upper Traylor Gallery in the Rogers-Traylor Art Building. All are welcome; no RSVP required. For more information\, visit our Events page. \nBriggs’ Gravity series revolves intrinsically around Black perseverance. The work in the exhibit dramatizes resisting the seeming inevitability of being pulled in specific directions by external forces. \nBriggs works primarily using pinch-forming and slab building processes and overall\, his work is about art making as inner development\, broadly understood. He creates distinctive\, high relief pinch-formed ceramic vessels and penetrating slab-built sculptural forms\, both genres often have interior space. The former is his meditative practice\, and the latter offers him opportunity to philosophize concretely and assess traditions that impede the possibility of ongoing equanimity in individuals and communities. Briggs was a 2024 NCECA Demonstrating Artist. He teaches at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and resides in Alfred\, New York. \n
